A hero turns the other cheek. Positive Role Models & Representations On the plus side, Hubie is kind, courteous, and considerate with everyone, no matter how they treat him. He remains cheerful even in the face of cruel bullying. Violet fosters kids and is also very kind to most people. Hubie's mom stands up for her son. But on the other hand, kids break rules (grabbing a handful of candy from a bowl marked "take one") and insult and physically abuse Hubie, as do most local adults. A teen boy treats his female peers as objects, a woman seems to enjoy being mean to her partner, a married couple threatens each other, and a teacher insults a student. Most main characters are White. And Sandler, who is abled, plays Hubie as if he has a mental disability, which is a problematic representation. Hubie is teased relentlessly and bullied. He's pushed into an open grave (where another person falls in after him). Local kids constantly throw things at Hubie, like candy, balls, eggs, and bags of poop. A teen threatens to beat him with a "tire iron. " Hubie hits a parked car and flies off his bike. In another scene, he vomits profusely. Locals begin disappearing, including a teen in a corn maze, a man in a haunted house, and a couple on a lonely night road. A character pretends to be a werewolf. Another has escaped from a hospital for those with mental illness. A character has people tied up and spreads gasoline around them, intending to light them on fire. A pig was said to be killed, and a cat is almost hit by a car. A museum scene depicts a guillotine hanging, and there are lots of references to Salem witches. A woman tells her husband she wishes he'd been knifed, and he replies by asking a policeman to "borrow" his gun. A woman is never turned on by her male partner, despite his best intentions, and this is a topic of regular conversation. Several women and one very little girl dress up in suggestive Harley Quinn costumes. One of the women says Halloween is the "only day of the year you get to show your ex what he's missing. " A patient escapes from a hospital for those with mental illness and leaves a decoy pile in his bed, including a hot dog positioned where his penis would be. Hubie and Violet kiss, once in person and once through the television. Teens kiss at a party, where a boy says he's eager to "hit on" a new crop of younger teen girls. A person dressed as a nun says, "I'm asexual, but that girl's making me hella horny. " Hubie is the constant target of insults, from both kids and adults -- even the local priest. A teacher cruelly insults a young bully in front of all the other kids in the school cafeteria, also announcing his deficient reading level. Potty talk includes "pee-pee, " "s--t, " "butt, " "drop a log, " "piss, " and "feces. " Running jokes include people calling Hubie "Pubie" and Hubie and his mom mistaking the word "boner" to mean "mistake. " Hubie's mom and her friend buy T-shirts at a used clothing store and don't seem to grasp their meaning, with slogans like "I shaved my balls for this? " "It's not going to lick itself! " and "Happy Hallo-weener, " among others. Other language includes "balls, " "boogers, " "ass, " "s--t, " "buffoon, " "suck, " "peckerhead, " "dummy, " "boobie, " "idiot, " "crap, " and "t-tty-twister. " Harley Quinn, Captain Underpants, Barbie, It, W izard of Oz, Ghostbusters. Drinking, Drugs & Smoking Teens drink beer, vape, and spike the punch with liquor at a Halloween party. Hubie Dubois ( Adam Sandler) considers himself responsible for monitoring activities every Halloween in his historic hometown of Salem, Mass., in HUBIE HALLOWEEN. Hubie still lives with his mom and carries a multipurpose Thermos with him everywhere, which -- combined with his implied mental disbility -- makes him the target of constant teasing and bullying by town locals. The only people who see his kind heart are his mom (June Squibb) and his local crush, foster mom Violet Valentine ( Julie Bowen). As Halloween hits this year, Hubie grapples with a new and suspicious neighbor ( Steve Buscemi), a local inmate on the run ( Rob Schneider), and people disappearing in strange ways. Is it any good? Nobody plays a kindhearted but simpleminded character like Sandler, which Hubie Halloween proves once again. Though, really, it's more than time for the abled Sandler to quit playing characters who have implied mental disabilities. Squarely targeting the teen (or tween) male audience, Hubie offers a mishmash of Halloween high jinx, potty talk, anatomical humor, and celebrity cameos. Viewers are expected to laugh as Hubie is bullied and insulted for an hour and a half. The onslaught of meanness is intended to make his largesse at the end of the movie that much more heroic, and the near absence of redeeming qualities in other characters is meant to make their ultimate confessions of insecurities more satisfying. But none of it is particularly funny or satisfying. It's mostly tiring, sometimes disturbing, and, at moments, very insensitive. Talk to your kids about... Families can talk about the moral of Hubie Halloween. Did the townsfolk learn their lesson? Did the character of Hubie remind you of any other characters played by Adam Sandler?
